Encephalopathy of Prematurity
We began our investigations for this project using human specimens, and found that SUR1 was upregulated the germinal matrix of premature infants.
Combining tandem insults of in-utero-ischemia (IUI) and post-natal raised intrathoracic pressure (mimicking positive pressure ventilation) we have developed a superior rodent model of encephalopathy of prematurity (EP) that faithfully recapitulates human pathology.
Further studies are underway to investigate the effects of blockade of the SUR1/TRPM4 in this model.
